Add Category
To add categories click the "Add Category" link in the Categories Sub-Menu.
You will then be taken to the "Add Product Category" page where you can add all the relevant details for your category.
Category NameThe category name is used for the page name, (URL), on your site, (e.g. www.quantumweb.co.uk/help).
The category name must be in an alpha/numeric format and be totally unique, i.e. you cannot have two categories with the same page name.
Quantum Optimisation Top Tip: Search engines will view the URL as an important source for keywords; therefore it can help to have your desired keywords in the URL field. However, ensure that your URL's are on-topic and not too lengthy.
Display NameThe display name is used as the text that will appear on the site in your main menu (if you have chosen to show the category on the menu). This needs to closely match the URL/Page Name for optimisation purposes; however, on occasions it may be necessary to have a different Display Name to the URL/Page Name. Please contact us if unsure.
ParentThe parent option gives you the ability to place the category that you are creating as a sub-category within another category. Click "Select Parent" to display the list of possible parent categories.
You can choose to add your category as a sub-category of an existing sub-category if you wish.
Clicking the number listed alongside the category name, will show the sub-categories within that category (the number indicates how many sub-categories are currently in use for that category).
By not selecting a parent, the category will automatically be added as a main category.
We suggest creating all of your Main/Top-Level Categories first to make your process straight forward. You can then create any subcategories to assign within the existing Main Categories.
An example of a Top Level Category (Parent/Main Category) may be Computers, with sub/child categories of Laptops, Desktops, Software etc
ImageTo insert an image, click "Browse" and search through the files on your computer to find your image. Once you have found the image that you wish to use, click "Open." The file name will then appear in the image field.
The category image will be displayed when users are browsing your Categories and also if you assign Categories to the Home Page using the Centre Product Grid.
OrderThis option gives you the ability to put your categories in the running order that you wish. For example, if you wanted to have ‘Sports Clothing' followed by ‘Sports Equipment', you would need to enter ‘Sports Clothing' as order number 1, and ‘Sports Equipment' as order number 2.
We strongly recommend that when entering your category order numbers, that you run in sequences of 5 or 10 rather than arranging them in a continuous sequence such as; 1,2,3,4,5,6... This will make it much easier if you want to add an extra category in between an existing category. If you have no preference as to the ordering of your categories, leave this area blank and they will be uploaded in the order that you add them to site.
DescriptionTo add a description to your category, simply insert text into the text box and format it the way you wish by using the WYSIWYG editor to alter font, colour, size controls etc. How and where this text is displayed will depend upon your website and design choices.
Hide CategoryIf you wish to hide a category that you are working on, or, for example, it is a category of products with a special sales release date, you can do so by checking the "Hide Category" check box, located just below the description text box. Once you are ready for the category to be shown on the site, you will need to simply un-check the box and re-submit. The category will then be shown on your website immediately.
External LinkHere you are given the option to link a category to another web page located on a different site. Enter the web address you wish to link your category to, and when you click "Submit" located at the bottom of the page, the link will be formed. A typical example of a way to use this would be for information regarding a category that is maintained on another site. For optimisation purposes, we advise that you have more outgoing links incoming links to your site than outgoing link going from your site to others.
TemplateThis is where you can alter the layout of the products/sub-categories displayed to people viewing your site. There are four different views to select from. Try changing the template for a category and view the changes on your site to see how each looks. Meta Title/Description/KeywordsYour Meta Title/Description/Keywords are what the search engines take into account when reading your site content. If left blank our system will generate its own information from your page and display names as well as the textual information that you put into your descriptions.
We tend to find that leaving these fields blank and allowing our self-optimising software to generate its own information achieves better search engine results.
However, should you wish to insert something that you feel will be more relevant, you may do so by adding them here.
SubmitOnce you have added all the data requested click "Submit" to save the changes. ![]() ![]() * Please use this form to ask a question about the subject above. If you are requesting a change or have an issue with your website, please use the technical support form |
