Meta Keyword Optimisation
The Meta Keywords tag allows you to provide additional text for search engines to index. (Please note: It's arguable that the meta keywords have any effect at all)
It is useful as a way to reinforce the terms you think are important on a page. Typically in the content of a page, you would mention a targeted key-phrase a certain number of times dependent on total page length. You can boost that key-phrase ranking further by using an exact match in your Meta Keywords.
If you do not use the keywords on the page content at all, then just adding them to the Meta Keywords tag is extremely unlikely to help the page do well for the term.
Meta keyword tags are commonly setup incorrectly; you will often find website’s repeating keywords. In past, people found that if they repeated keywords enough times in this Meta Tag, the search engines would "think" they were relevant to the page and perhaps give it a high ranking for those keywords. Because of this abuse, too much repetition will now hurt you rather than help you.
Never insert the same word twice in a row in this tag, even if you're using different variations. This includes plurals, ALL CAPS, different tenses, etc. You can use the same word in different phrases, but never use that word more than three or four times within the tag, even if you're using different variations of it.
Meta Keyword Guidelines:
• Choose achievable keywords relevant to the page content.
• Include the Meta Keywords in the head of the document.
• Do not repeat keywords within this tag.
• The Meta Description and Title Tag should correspond with the Meta Keywords and the predominant key phrase from the Title Tag is most important to incorporate within this meta value.
• The first words in any tag are assumed to be given more weight, so these are the most important.
• Key phrases should be separated by a comma and a space.
• Do not use too many key phrases within Meta Keywords as this will dilute the page effectiveness.
