URL Optimisation - Brief
A URL is displayed within the search result for a specific query, below the Meta Description and can be seen in the address bar of your browser.
Ensure that you create descriptive categories and filenames for the documents on your website, as it will not only help you keep your site better organised, but it could also lead to better crawling of your documents by search engines. Furthermore, it can create easier, "friendlier" URLs for those that want to link to your content.
Some users might link to your page using the URL of that page as the anchor text. If your URL contains relevant words, this provides users and search engines with more information about the page than an ID or oddly named parameter would.
Example or Optimised URL in Google:

Guidelines for good URL Optimisation:
• Your URL’s MUST be relevant to the page content
• Use the page key phrase within the URL; this might include a product name and manufacturer category for example.
• Do not use lengthy URLs with unnecessary parameters and session IDs
• Once again, try to avoid repeating keywords too much.
• Avoid deep nesting of subdirectories like ".../dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4/dir5/dir6/page.html".
• If you do have more than one URL pointing with the same content, use the Canonical tag to inform Google, (for example, a product may be added to more than one category). Another method would be to use a “301 redirect” however it is not as effective as it may result in site navigation changing for the user.
• Do not mix www. and non-www. versions of URLs in your internal linking structure and you MUST ensure you have a permanent redirect from your sitename.co.uk to your www.sitename.co.uk. If you do not have this in place, you will not get full credit from Google for your website.
• Try to use only lowercase words within the URL.
• Separate different words within your URL’s with hyphens.
