Heading Tag Optimisation

Foreword: If you find that your website does not adhere to the basic guidelines below, your website is unlikely to be performing well within the search engines. If this is the case please contact us to find out what we can do for you.

Our website systems automatically generate the best elements to optimise any page across the search engines.

Heading Tag Optimisation

Heading tags (not to be confused with the HTML tag or HTTP headers) are used to present structure on the page to users.

There are six sizes of heading tags, beginning with H1 the most important and ending H6 with the least important. They can also help prioritise keywords in order of importance.

Since heading tags typically make text contained in them larger than normal text on the page, this is a visual cue to users that this text is important and could help them understand something about the type of content underneath the heading text. Multiple heading sizes used in order create a hierarchical structure for your content, making it easier for users to navigate through your document.

The HTML tag

"heading" is heavily weighted in Google algorithms. Optimising the

and Title Tag will provide a boost in your search engine rankings. Again, you should not repeat keywords in this tag, as it will be seen as spam.

Heading Tag Guidelines

• Similar to writing an outline for a large paper, put some thought into what the main points and sub-points of the content on the page will be and decide where to use heading tags appropriately.
• Avoid placing text in heading tags that wouldn't be helpful in defining the structure of the page
• Do not use heading tags where other tags like and may be more appropriate
• Use heading tags in a sequential manner down the document.
• Make use of the main page keywords, but do not spam them.
• Use heading tags where it makes sense.
